A Disastrous Run Chase

Sri Lanka chased a challenging 169-run target in Colombo. First, Matt Henry silenced the massive home crowd immediately. He bowled star batter Pathum Nissanka on the very first delivery. Consequently, the host team never recovered their shattered morale.

Next, Kusal Mendis attempted a slow recovery alongside Pavan Rathnayake. However, their laborious 21-run partnership ended abruptly. Thus, the Sri Lankan batting order entered a complete free fall.

Rachin Ravindra Dominates

Rachin Ravindra delivered an absolutely incredible bowling performance. Furthermore, he achieved his career-best bowling figures during this match. Specifically, he claimed four crucial wickets for just 27 runs.

He successfully dismissed Dasun Shanaka and Dushan Hemantha quickly. Meanwhile, Kamindu Mendis desperately attempted reverse sweeps late in the game. Ultimately, he departed for 31 runs after pulling a short delivery. Therefore, Sri Lanka finished with a dismal 107 runs.

New Zealand’s Incredible Recovery

Earlier, Sri Lankan spinners completely controlled the match tempo initially. Maheesh Theekshana extracted massive grip and turn from the pitch. Consequently, New Zealand collapsed from 75 runs down to 84.

However, Mitchell Santner and Cole McConchie rescued the struggling Kiwis. They built an incredible 84-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Furthermore, they smashed 70 runs during the final four overs. Ultimately, this brilliant late surge secured their massive victory.
