Mohsin Naqvi, PCB chairman, set to replace Jay Shah as Asian Cricket Council president: Report

The current Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, is likely to become the new President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), replacing Jay Shah, who is now the chairman of the ICC.

Naqvi is expected to take over the role after ACC meetings scheduled for October and November this year.

As per reports, Naqvi will be announced as Shah’s replacement during these meetings. He is expected to start his two-year term as ACC President in 2025.

An insider mentioned that during the ACC meeting later this year, Naqvi will be confirmed as the next president for a two-year term. Once Jay Shah steps down, Naqvi will take over.

Jay Shah was ACC President for four years, receiving a one-year extension after his initial three-year term.

Mohsin Naqvi’s two-year term as ACC President will involve managing the Asia Cup in 2025, which will be hosted in India, and guiding the ACC’s future plans. As both PCB chief and ACC president, Naqvi will also be involved in the ICC Champions Trophy, which is set to take place in Pakistan in 2025.

Naqvi became PCB chairman in February 2024 and took on the role of Pakistan’s interior minister in March 2024. If he becomes ACC President, it will be his third major position within the same year.

One of the key challenges Naqvi will face is handling the issue of whether India’s cricket team will participate in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. India hasn’t played in Pakistan since 2008.

Naqvi has faced criticism during his early days as PCB chief, especially after Pakistan lost the first Test match against Bangladesh and were knocked out of the T20 World Cup in the group stage following a heavy defeat to the USA.
