R Ashwin Reveals Why He Retired and His Thoughts on Farewell Matches

Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy shocked cricket fans, sparking widespread speculation. The legendary off-spinner, who announced his decision mid-series, was only picked for one of the first three Tests before stepping away from international cricket.

While some, like former cricketer Manoj Tiwary, speculated he felt insulted, and ex-India bowling coach Bharat Arun suggested he was “hurt,” Ashwin has now clarified the real reasons behind his abrupt retirement.

R Ashwin Breaks His Silence

Speaking on his show, Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin addressed the rumors, emphasizing that his decision was personal and not influenced by external factors.

“I needed this break. I left the series midway. I did not talk much about cricket, though I did post a few things on X after the Sydney and Melbourne Tests. I didn’t discuss retirement because I wanted to respect the sanctity of the dressing room. The fan war is very toxic nowadays,” he said.

R Ashwin dismissed the speculation and described his decision as instinctive.

“People are saying many things, but there is nothing like that. At that time, I felt I had lost my creativity. Endings can be happy too. There is no reason to speculate much.”

On Farewell Matches

Ashwin also spoke candidly about not having a farewell Test match, explaining why it wasn’t a priority for him.

“I believe there is nothing important about having a farewell match. If I get a farewell Test but am not deserving of a place in the side, I wouldn’t be happy. I think it’s always better to stop when people ask ‘why’ and not ‘why not.'”

A Legendary Career

Ashwin retired with 537 wickets in 106 Tests, making him India’s second-highest wicket-taker in all formats, only behind the iconic Anil Kumble.
