Varun Chakravarthy delivered a match-winning performance in India’s final group-stage encounter against New Zealand, strengthening his case for a spot in the semi-final against Australia.

A Game-Changing Spell

Replacing Harshit Rana, Varun made an immediate impact in only his second ODI, claiming a brilliant 5-wicket haul (5/42) to power India to a 44-run victory in Dubai. His spell dismantled New Zealand’s chase of 250, marking a dominant display of spin bowling.

Kumble’s Praise for Varun

Legendary spinner Anil Kumble hailed Varun as “exceptional”, emphasizing his consistent match-winning performances over the last 1-1.5 years across formats. Speaking on ESPNcricinfo Match Day, Kumble said:

“Whether for Tamil Nadu, KKR, or India in T20Is, Varun has been delivering. His performance today in ODIs gives India a strong advantage going into the semi-finals, especially considering the conditions in Dubai.”

A Nightmare for Opponents?

With India set to face Australia at the same venue, Kumble believes the four-pronged spin attack could prove too tough for the Aussies to handle.

“If the pitch remains the same, Australia’s batters will struggle against India’s spinners,” he added.

Varun’s Impactful Spell

  • Dismissed Will Young early, breaking New Zealand’s rhythm.
  • Struck twice in consecutive overs, removing Glenn Phillips and Michael Bracewell.
  • Wrapped up the lower order with key wickets of Mitchell Santner and Matt Henry.

From Nerves to Confidence

After the match, Varun admitted to early nerves but credited senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for calming him down.

“I found out last night that I was playing. I was nervous but talking to Virat and Rohit bhai helped me settle in.”

India’s Road Ahead

With the semi-final against Australia approaching, all eyes will be on India’s spin quartet. If Varun retains his place, he could be India’s X-factor in their hunt for the Champions Trophy title.
