Delhi Capitals (DC) have officially named Faf du Plessis as the vice-captain for the upcoming IPL 2025 season, supporting newly appointed captain Axar Patel.
Du Plessis, who led Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for three seasons, was released ahead of the mega auction last year and was picked up by DC for INR 2 crore (US$0.24 million). He was chosen over KL Rahul, another experienced IPL captain, who also joined Delhi Capitals this season. According to ESPNcricinfo, du Plessis’ leadership experience and consistent batting performances made him the preferred choice for the vice-captaincy role.
A Veteran Leader in the IPL

Faf du Plessis has been an integral part of the IPL since 2012, when he was first signed by Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He played for CSK till 2015 before moving to Rising Pune Supergiant during CSK’s suspension. After returning to CSK in 2018, he played a key role in their title-winning campaign in 2021.
Following the IPL 2022 mega auction, RCB secured his services and appointed him as captain, replacing Virat Kohli. Under his leadership, RCB reached the playoffs in 2022 and 2024 but fell short of securing their first IPL title. His IPL record, as highlighted by IPLT20.com, stands at:
- Matches: 145
- Runs: 4571
- Average: 35.99
- Strike Rate: 136.37
As per BBC Sport Apart from the IPL, du Plessis remains active in the T20 franchise circuit. Earlier this year, he played for Joburg Super Kings in SA20 and could be a sought-after player in The Hundred, with Southern Brave, now owned by GMR Group, reportedly eyeing him for their squad.
Delhi Capitals’ Overhaul for IPL 2025
Delhi Capitals, still searching for their maiden IPL title, have made significant changes to their squad and coaching staff. The franchise parted ways with Ricky Ponting and appointed Hemang Badani as head coach, with Matthew Mott as assistant coach, and Kevin Pietersen as team mentor. Other additions to the support staff include Munaf Patel, Venugopal Rao, and Vijay Bharadwaj in key roles.

A major shift came with Rishabh Pant’s departure from DC. Fans can stay updated with the latest team developments on their official website The former captain was released and later acquired by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), where he has now been appointed as their captain. KL Rahul, who previously led LSG, also moved to DC but was not considered for the leadership role.
