A Historic Debut for Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians’ left-arm seamer Ashwani Kumar created history by becoming the first Indian bowler to take a four-wicket haul on IPL debut, playing a key role in dismissing Kolkata Knight Riders for 116 at the Wankhede Stadium.
Speaking after his impressive performance, the 23-year-old admitted he was nervous before the game and even skipped lunch due to pre-match tension.
Match-Winning Spell
Ashwani, who was bought for INR 30 lakh at the mega auction, delivered a game-changing spell. He struck with his first IPL delivery, dismissing KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane, followed by Rinku Singh, Manish Pandey, and Andre Russell. His figures of 4 for 24 in three overs played a crucial role in MI’s dominant bowling display.
Strategy Against Andre Russell

One of Ashwani’s biggest scalps was Andre Russell, who hit his first ball for four but was soon dismissed. The Mumbai team had identified Russell as a key threat and planned to bowl into his body to restrict his attacking strokes.
A Rising Star for Mumbai Indians
Ashwani’s debut performance wasn’t just about his bowling. He also displayed quick reflexes and sharp fielding skills, taking a stunning catch at mid-off to dismiss Quinton de Kock.
The MI team management acknowledged Ashwani’s varied skill set, which earned him a place in the playing XI. His ability to swing the ball late and maintain control under pressure makes him a valuable addition to the squad.
