The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 12 runs in a high-voltage clash during the IPL 2025 season, extending their head-to-head lead to 6-1. Despite a stunning five-wicket haul by Hardik Pandya, MI fell short in their chase of 204 runs.

Marsh, Markram Fire LSG Past 200

Batting first, LSG were off to a blistering start thanks to Mitchell Marsh (60) and Aiden Markram (53). Marsh made the most of an early reprieve and punished the bowlers with nine fours and two sixes. Their 69-run powerplay stand set the tone for the innings. Even though Nicholas Pooran and Rishabh Pant couldn’t make big scores, Ayush Badoni chipped in with a late flourish (30 off 14). David Miller added crucial runs at the death as LSG posted 203/8. Mitchell Santner went wicketless and leaked runs, while Hardik Pandya stood out with 5 for 36.

Suryakumar, Dhir Fight Back for MI

MI’s reply started with early hiccups, losing Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton cheaply. But Suryakumar Yadav (67) and Naman Dhir (46) stitched a 70-run stand that brought them back into the game. Dhir’s fearless strokeplay and Surya’s finesse had MI at 135/3 by the 15th over. However, LSG’s death bowling unit—led by Shardul Thakur and Avesh Khan—turned the tide. The pressure mounted, and Suryakumar’s dismissal in the 17th over was the turning point.

Tactical Call: Tilak Retired Out

In a rare move, MI retired out Tilak Varma with just seven balls left, hoping for some quick fireworks. However, Santner’s arrival didn’t shift the momentum, and even Hardik’s big six in the final over wasn’t enough to snatch victory. Coach Mahela Jayawardene and skipper Hardik explained that Tilak was struggling and a fresh batter was needed to finish the game. But MI could only manage 191/5.

Summary: LSG Remain MI’s Nemesis

This loss marks MI’s sixth defeat in seven matches against LSG. Despite Hardik Pandya’s brilliance, the team failed to capitalize, raising concerns about their batting depth and death-over execution.
