Arjun Menon, the operations director of Cricket Malawi and a respected figure in global cricket development, has died at the age of 48. His passing occurred on Sunday in Blantyre, Malawi’s financial and commercial hub. Local police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

Originally a cricketer for Singapore, Menon transitioned into coaching and played a significant role in developing the sport across several non-traditional cricketing nations. His coaching résumé includes stints with national teams in Chile, Botswana, Indonesia, and his home country, Singapore. He took up his role with Cricket Malawi in 2020, where he was instrumental in driving a new vision for the sport.

Vivek Ganesan, president of Cricket Malawi, shared a heartfelt tribute:

“As Cricket Malawi, we are devastated by this loss because Arjun did so much to our transformative agenda. All the successes we have so far are attributed to him. This is a very painful loss.”

Dr. Henry Kamata, CEO of the Malawi National Council of Sports, also expressed deep sorrow in an official statement:

“Arjun was a dedicated coach and a passionate advocate for the development of cricket in Malawi. His contributions to the sport were immense and far-reaching. His commitment, professionalism, and vision were truly inspirational. His loss is a devastating blow to the sporting fraternity in Malawi and beyond.”

Under Menon’s leadership, Malawi made significant strides in both men’s and women’s cricket. In September 2024, the men’s national team finished as runners-up behind Tanzania in Group A of the ICC T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Africa Qualifier. The Under-19 women’s team also achieved a milestone by topping Division 2 of the 2025 Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier. This performance earned them a spot in Division 1, where they finished in seventh place—an encouraging sign of progress for women’s cricket in the country.

Menon’s efforts left a lasting mark on the cricketing landscape in Malawi. His dedication to building infrastructure, training programs, and competitive teams has laid a foundation that will benefit future generations.
