Kohli Just One Big Hit Away from Reclaiming the Orange Cap as IPL 2025

The IPL returns to action tonight after a brief pause, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) locking horns with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) — a perfect mirror of the tournament opener back on March 22. With 17 matches still to go, the battle for the prestigious Orange and Purple Caps is heating up once again.

First up, the story everyone’s watching: Virat Kohli. The RCB skipper, fresh off his recent Test retirement announcement, is just a few runs away from snatching back the Orange Cap. Kohli scored a sparkling 62 off 33 balls in his last outing against Chennai Super Kings, marking his seventh half-century of the season. That innings took him to 505 runs, placing him fourth on the list — but only a whisker behind the top scorers. In fact, the Orange Cap leaderboard is incredibly tight. Mumbai Indians’ Suryakumar Yadav leads with 510 runs, while Gujarat Titans’ Jos Buttler, B Sai Sudharsan, and Shubman Gill all hover just above or below the 500-run mark. Kohli needs a mere six runs to leapfrog back to the top.

Given Kohli’s form at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium — where he’s already notched seven fifties in 11 innings this season — he’s likely to do more than just reclaim the cap. The home crowd, eager to celebrate their hero fresh from international retirement, will surely expect another memorable innings.

On the bowling front, eyes will be on Varun Chakravarthy. Sitting on 17 wickets, he has a chance tonight to ramp up the pressure on the current Purple Cap leaders, Prasidh Krishna and Noor Ahmad. With the competition for the Purple Cap just as fierce, Chakravarthy’s performance could prove pivotal in the coming games.

Meanwhile, the earlier records from the Punjab Kings (PBKS) versus Delhi Capitals (DC) game — including the promising 122-run opening stand between Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya — have been wiped from the books due to the match’s abandonment. But Prabhsimran, currently seventh on the Orange Cap chart with 437 runs, will soon have another chance to add to his tally when PBKS face Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Sunday.

With such tight margins and high stakes, the final stretch of IPL 2025 promises to deliver thrilling cricket — and plenty of shifts atop the leaderboards.
