Captain Cool

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, fondly known as “Captain Cool” by fans around the world, has moved a step closer to legally owning his famous nickname.

According to public filings from Intellectual Property India, Dhoni applied for the ‘Captain Cool’ trademark on 5 June 2023 under Class 41, a category that covers sports-related services including coaching, training, and sports facilities.

The application has already cleared its initial hurdle, marked as “Accepted and Advertised.” This means it passed the first review and has been published in the official journal, opening a window for anyone to oppose it before final approval is granted.

If no objections come up, Dhoni will officially secure exclusive rights to use ‘Captain Cool’, paving the way for him to launch sports academies, fitness brands, or training programs under the name in the future.

But interestingly, Dhoni isn’t the first person to try and claim the moniker.

Back in July 2021, a company called Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Private Limited, based in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, filed an application to trademark ‘Captain Cool’ for online gaming and gaming services. Their filing, recorded under Application No. 5048887, was also under Class 41.

However, the status of that earlier application has now changed to “Rectification Filed,” suggesting that there’s been a legal challenge or correction request—quite possibly linked to Dhoni’s own claim. If Dhoni’s team formally objects, the earlier application may be canceled or modified to avoid conflicts.

This legal move underscores how valuable the nickname has become over the years. Beyond being a term of affection, ‘Captain Cool’ has the potential to grow into a powerful brand.

Dhoni was last seen in action during the IPL 2025 season, stepping back into captaincy for the Chennai Super Kings after regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad suffered an injury mid-season. Unfortunately for CSK, the campaign ended on a sour note as the team finished bottom of the table, their worst performance ever.

Since retiring from international cricket in August 2020, Dhoni has only played in the IPL. He was listed as an uncapped player this season, having not represented India for five years.

If all goes smoothly, it won’t be long before Dhoni’s calm, composed persona is officially trademarked as ‘Captain Cool’, reinforcing a legacy that extends far beyond the cricket field.
