Ashleigh Gardner Ruled Out of New Zealand T20I Series with Fractured Finger

Charli Knott Called Up as Replacement for Remaining Matches

Australia’s star allrounder Ashleigh Gardner has been ruled out of the remainder of the T20I series against New Zealand after scans confirmed a fracture in her right index finger.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Gardner will return to Sydney for further scans and specialist consultation. In her absence, Ellyse Perry will serve as vice-captain, while uncapped allrounder Charli Knott has been called up for the final two matches of the series.

Australia Takes Early Lead in the Series

Australia secured a dominant eight-wicket victory in the first T20I in Auckland, chasing 138 runs in just 13.3 overs. Beth Mooney (75 off 42 balls) and Georgia Voll (50 off 31 balls)* ensured that Gardner’s absence with the bat was not felt.

However, BBC Sport reported that Gardner’s injury occurred in the 17th over of the New Zealand innings. While attempting a caught-and-bowled chance off Sophie Devine, she spilled the ball and immediately signaled discomfort, leading to her exit from the field.

Replacement & Captaincy Adjustments

With Gardner out, The Cricketer highlighted that Australia’s squad depth remains strong. Charli Knott, the young batting allrounder from Queensland, has been drafted in for the remaining games.

Knott has been a rising star in domestic cricket, and her inclusion offers Australia another spin-bowling option alongside Georgia Wareham and Alana King.

Next Matches & Series Outlook

The second T20I is scheduled for Sunday, March 23, followed by the final match on Wednesday, March 26. With Australia leading 1-0, they will look to seal the series in the upcoming game.

A report from Wisden suggests that Australia’s depth in all-rounders will help them cope with Gardner’s absence. Meanwhile, New Zealand will aim to capitalize on her unavailability and level the series.

As Gardner undergoes further medical evaluation, her availability for upcoming international assignments remains uncertain.
