Mumbai Indians (MI) secured their first win of IPL 2025 with a commanding eight-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium. This win extended MI’s dominance over KKR at their home ground, improving their head-to-head record to 10-2.

Debutant Ashwani Kumar was the standout performer, delivering a sensational spell of 4 for 24, the best-ever figures by an Indian bowler on IPL debut. His efforts helped MI bowl out KKR for just 116, setting up a comfortable chase that was anchored by Ryan Rickelton’s unbeaten 62.

Ashwani Kumar’s Dream Debut

At just 23 years old, with only four T20 matches under his belt, Ashwani entered the game with nerves. The tension was evident as he even skipped lunch before the match. However, once on the field, he made an instant impact, dismissing KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane with his very first IPL delivery.

Over his three-over spell, he also took the prized wickets of Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, and Manish Pandey, showing remarkable control over his length and pace variations.

Trent Boult’s Early Strikes

Ashwani’s brilliance was backed by MI’s experienced new-ball duo. Trent Boult, known for his ability to strike early, dismissed Sunil Narine in the first over—the 30th time in IPL history he has struck in the opening over.

At the other end, Deepak Chahar executed a well-thought-out strategy against Quinton de Kock, forcing him into a mistimed shot that resulted in a catch at mid-off. KKR’s aggressive approach backfired as they lost key wickets while attempting to accelerate on a pace-friendly pitch.

Rickelton’s Match-Winning Fifty

While MI’s bowlers dominated the first innings, Ryan Rickelton ensured a smooth chase, finishing with an unbeaten 62 off 42 balls. The South African batter overcame a slow start, making the most of loose deliveries from Harshit Rana and Sunil Narine.

He reached his fifty with a six and was at the other end when Suryakumar Yadav sealed the victory with another maximum. However, concerns remain over Rohit Sharma’s form, as he managed just 13 runs before falling early in the chase.
