Avesh Khan nails five yorkers in impeccable last over to leave Axar Patel, Tristan Stubbs helpless as RR beat DC in IPL

Avesh Khan’s fantastic performance in the final over helped Rajasthan Royals secure a victory against Delhi Capitals in their IPL 2024 match.

Rajasthan Royals remained undefeated as they defeated Delhi Capitals by 12 runs in their second match of the IPL 2024 season, which took place in Jaipur on Friday. Delhi Capitals were chasing a target of 186 runs. Despite needing 17 runs off the last over, it seemed like they still had a chance to win. However, Avesh Khan, the Indian pacer, had different ideas. Chosen by skipper Sanju Samson to bowl the crucial final over, Avesh only conceded four runs. This restricted Delhi Capitals to a total of 173/5 in their allotted 20 overs.

Avesh Khan, who is 27 years old, began the over with a delivery aimed at the yorker length. Tristan Stubbs managed to hit it towards extra cover for a single. In the next delivery, Avesh bowled another yorker, which Axar Patel couldn’t guide towards third man, resulting in a dot ball. Following that, Avesh gave away a single, followed by another single by Stubbs. In the fifth delivery, Avesh bowled a low full toss, which Axar completely missed, followed by another single off a full delivery.

Stubbs (44) and Axar (15) finished unbeaten for DC in what was a disappointing night for them. Nandre Burger and Yuzvendra Chahal from RR took two wickets each, while Avesh Khan also managed to dismiss a batsman.

Initially, Riyan Parag played an impressive unbeaten innings, scoring 84 runs off 45 balls to help RR reach a total of 185/5 in 20 overs. Parag showcased fine form, hitting seven fours and six sixes during his innings.

Reflecting on the match, Avesh said, “My strategy was clear; I aimed to bowl wide yorkers considering one side was longer. I gave myself 5 seconds before each ball to think and then execute my plan. If the batters played good shots, credit to them, but I always trusted my yorkers. Learning from Boult, Burger, and Sandy has been invaluable. The team management and Kumar Sangakkara have provided tremendous support, reducing our fear of failure. I’m always looking to improve and innovate new deliveries in T20s. Resting well, working hard in the nets has helped me refine my skills.

Following this victory, RR sits second in the points table with four points from two matches, just behind CSK who lead with the same number of points but a better net run rate. SRH holds the third position, while KKR is in fourth place.
