England captain Ben Stokes had a light-hearted take on Wiaan Mulder’s surprising decision to declare South Africa’s innings while unbeaten on 367 runs against Zimbabwe. Mulder was just 34 runs short of breaking Brian Lara’s all-time record for the highest individual Test score but chose to walk off out of “respect” for the West Indies legend.
Asked about it ahead of England’s Test at Lord’s, Stokes admitted he admired the gesture but couldn’t help chuckling at how rare such an opportunity is.
“I think it’s, as a player, something you’d rather do yourself than have your captain pull you out. But fair play to him,” Stokes said. “He said he wanted the record to stay with Brian Lara. He’s not going to get that opportunity again (laughs). But they got the win, and that’s the main thing.”
South Africa declared their innings at a towering 626 for 5. They went on to thrash Zimbabwe by an innings and 236 runs in Bulawayo.
Stokes on Archer’s Return
Stokes also spoke about Jofra Archer’s comeback to Test cricket after four years out with injuries.
“It’s really exciting, not just for England fans but for Jof himself,” he said. “He should be very proud of how he’s handled everything and got himself back playing cricket again. It’s been a long road.”
