KKR Strengthen Their Pace Attack Ahead of IPL 2025
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have signed left-arm pacer Chetan Sakariya as a replacement for speedster Umran Malik, who has been ruled out of IPL 2025 due to injury. Malik, known for his express pace, has struggled with injuries and has not played competitive cricket since IPL 2024. According to ESPNcricinfo, KKR made this move to ensure they have enough depth in their pace attack.
Malik’s Injury Woes Continue

The 25-year-old pacer from Jammu burst onto the scene in 2021 with his ability to consistently bowl at speeds exceeding 150 kmph. However, recurring injuries and illnesses have hampered his progress. He was expected to play in the Duleep Trophy at the start of the 2024-25 domestic season but was forced to withdraw after suffering from dengue. Later, he was diagnosed with a hip fracture, further delaying his return, as reported by Cricbuzz.
Sakariya’s Road to Recovery

Sakariya, who last played competitive cricket in February 2024 during a Ranji Trophy match for Saurashtra, is also making a comeback from injury. The left-arm pacer has represented India in two T20Is, picking up one wicket at an economy of 9.27. While he is not a direct replacement for Malik in terms of pace, his left-arm variation adds depth to KKR’s bowling attack.
KKR Aiming to Defend Their IPL Title
KKR, the defending champions, secured their third IPL trophy after defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024 final. The franchise has placed its trust in a stable core while making a few strategic additions to strengthen the squad. With Anrich Nortje’s history of injuries, Sakariya’s addition could prove crucial. As per IPL’s official website, KKR is focused on maintaining their winning momentum in the upcoming season.
