For most of the cricket players U-19 is the way for becoming globe super stars in Cricket but it is not so easy from becoming juniors to senior level which contains many hurdles and struggles. If they don’t make big on match then so soon they will be forgotten by all especially fans.
In such way 2008 U-19 World Cup gave us most memorable thing by giving stars like Virat Kohli. Other than him we got many stars from that tournament who grabbed headlines back then.
Here is the players who were featured in U-19 World Cup and their present places in Cricket.
- Openers Taruwar Kohli and Shreevats Goswami
Taruwar Kolhi was dismissed by Wayne Parnell in finals for 1 run and his performance was not that great with bat. But he looked pretty organized and this right hander appeared to be having great feature a head. He never was in the idea of India Selection while he have some noticeable seasons with bat in domestic cricket.
Shreevats Goswami was excellent behind the stumps though he didn’t perform well with bat scoring 6 runs. He was in the same route of Taruwar Kohli who didn’t have open doors for senior level Indian team. In IPL 2020 auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad bought the southpaw for INR 1 Crore.
In the domestic cricket, he was Bengal’s second choice keeper at the moment and when Wriddhiman was unavailable he kept wickets for his state team. Recently he also featured in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as well.
- Middle order Tanmay Srivastava and Virat Kohli
In 2008 U-19 Srivastava was leading run scorer with 262 runs attending 6 games with an average of 52.40. In the finals too he performed well scoring 46 runs off 74 balls guiding India towards 159 respectable total.
Srivastava recently in a position of Uttarkhand Ranji Trophy followed by Unmukt Chand another U-19 star.
In 2008, Virat Kohli made his debut for senior Indian team and is now leading Indian Cricket team as captain in all the three formats. He scored more than 20,000 runs at senior level and expert in breaking the records.
He is a greatest Batsman of all time with his consistency being at peaks. It is a quite and fruitful journey of Virat Kohli from U-19 World Cup winning team to leading the country to international level in all formats.
- Finishers Saurabh Tiwary , Manish Pandey
Saurabh Tiwary is one of the U-19 2008 team who occupied place in Senior team. He didn’t get the opportunity so easily as his captain got straight away but got it after playing couple of domestic seasons. Currently he made a contract with Mumbai Indians for IPL and playing domestic cricket for Jharkhand.
Manish Pandey’s career went on straight to straight after playing U-19 World Cup. He play IPLs regularly and also a key player in Karnataka side. He played IPL for teams like Royal Challengers Bangalore, Pune Warriors India, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Now he is currently a part of T20I and Indian ODI Squads.
Though his role is not certain in both the teams, he has been in and around the group. He couldn’t seal his birth though he got the opportunity to play for India but his consistency in domestic cricket was super and kept himself in sights of Indian Selectors.
- Spinners – Ravindra Jadeja, Iqbal Abdulla
Ravindra Jadeja is into the inaugural season of IPL straight away after U-19 World Cup 2008. He played a vital role I Rajasthan Royals team in that season. His excellent performance in the first cricket made him enter into Indian Senior Team. At the moment he was into all the formats of the cricket. He was no.1 ODI bowler at some particular stage of his career and also scored triple centuries in first class cricket which helped in being in permanent place in Indian Test side.
Idbal Abdulla career went in decent way till he was with Kolkata Knight Riders and once he released from that team his career went downside. He was in Royal Challengers Bangalore team for some time but couldn’t succeed more. At the beginning of his career into senior level he was into Mumbai team in first class cricket. Later as a professional cricketer he moved to North East and playing first class cricket for Sikkim.
- Fast bowlers Pradeep Sangwan, Siddarth kaul, Ajitesh Argal
In U-19 World Cup 2008, Pradeep Sangwan was one of the most promising fast bowler as he was able to swing the ball back into right handers. But at the first level cricket, he struggled bit with his consistency.
Now he was selected by Delhi franchise for inaugural IPL and still in the squad of Delhi for playing first class cricket. Now this 29 year old is not in the circle of Indian selectors thought and have no contract for IPL.
Siddharth Kaul recently played for India and very close to national set up. He has a scope of playing in White ball cricket if the first choice bowlers are not available due to fitness issues or any other issues. He also had a contract with Sunrisers Hyderabad for IPL.
Ajitesh Argal was the man of the match in the final U-19 World Cup 2008 and is now his career is over. He is currently working as Inspector in Income Tax Department in Vadodara.
