Chennai Super Kings (CSK) stand-in captain MS Dhoni spoke after the team suffered their fifth consecutive loss in IPL 2025. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated CSK by 8 wickets with 59 balls remaining while chasing a target of 104.

CSK scored 103 — their lowest total at Chepauk in IPL history. Before this match, CSK had chased in all five previous games. This time, Dhoni won the toss and chose to bat first.

On a slow and spin-friendly pitch, KKR bowlers Vaibhav Arora and Moeen Ali took early wickets. CSK scored 31/2 in the powerplay and kept losing wickets. There were no significant partnerships in the innings.

Dhoni came in to bat at No. 9 and was dismissed for 1 off 4 balls. He was given out lbw and reviewed the decision. There was a spike on UltraEdge, but third umpire Vinod Seshan upheld the on-field decision.

CSK currently has the slowest powerplay scoring rate in IPL 2025. They scored 30/3 against RCB and now 31/2 against KKR in the powerplay.

This was also CSK’s first instance of losing three consecutive matches at home in a single IPL season. The loss against KKR is their biggest defeat in IPL history by balls remaining — 59 balls. The previous record was 46 balls, when they lost to Mumbai Indians in 2020.

CSK is currently placed ninth in the points table, just above Sunrisers Hyderabad, with a slightly better Net Run Rate (NRR).
