Eoin Morgan opens up on going unsold at mega auction despite leading KKR to IPL 2021 final, labels it ‘win-win’ situation

England’s World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan has opened up on not being picked up in the IPL 2022 mega auction.

Eoin Morgan is viewed as one of the most astute thinkers in white-ball cricket and he is viewed as one of the best captains in the limited-overs format. He is credited for changing the way England play its white-ball cricket and he even has a World Cup to his name. He had led England to glory in the 2019 tournament. Last year, Morgan was in charge of Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL and he had led the side to the final, where they fell short against Chennai Super Kings.

However, Morgan was not retained by KKR and then he was not picked up by any franchise in the mega auction which took place in February this year in Bengaluru. The England white-ball captain is not fazed by not being picked in the cash-rich league.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Morgan said: “I looked at the IPL as a win-win, to be honest. Being there at the biggest tournament in the world is an experience that I’ve used to my advantage over the years and I’ve had some great memories and experiences along the way. But looking to the rest of the year for us, once I start playing again, it doesn’t stop until after the World Cup. I’ve had a lovely period at home: good family time.”

Morgan’s former IPL franchise KKR have had a good start to their IPL 2022 season under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer.

Out of five games, KKR have managed to win three and currently, they are at the second spot in the points table. The side last suffered a defeat against the Delhi Capitals on Sunday.

KKR will next square off against SunRisers Hyderabad on Friday.

IPL 2022: Eoin Morgan not pertubed by going unsold at auction – Having a good family time

England’s limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan opened up about being unsold at the IPL 2022 mega auction after leading Kolkata Knight Riders to the final last season.

England international cricketer Eoin Morgan went unsold at the IPL 2022 mega auction after leading Kolkata Knight Riders to last season’s final that they lost to Chennai Super Kings.

Morgan was neither retained nor bought by any other franchise this season, being among the many names that missed out on playing in the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League.

Eoin Morgan could only manage 133 runs in 17 games in IPL 2021, having the worst performance in a season for the former KKR skipper.

Morgan, known as one of the sharpest minds going around, has a big reputation for finishing in the IPL. He has represented Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings 11 Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in the past before returning to Kolkata Knight Riders in 2020. He took the captaincy midway that season from Dinesh Karthik, and led KKR to the final in 2021.

“[I looked at the IPL] as a win-win, to be honest,” Morgan told ESPNCricinfo on Monday. “Being there at the biggest tournament in the world is an experience that I’ve used to my advantage over the years and I’ve had some great memories and experiences along the way,” said Morgan.

“But looking to the rest of the year for us, once I start playing again, it doesn’t stop until after the World Cup. I’ve had a lovely period at home: good family time,” he added.

Eoin Morgan led England to the 2019 World Cup win on home soil and the 2021 T20 World Cup semi-finals which the Kiwis won by 5 wickets. However, the veteran has been out of action after picking up a quad injury in the series against West Indies.
