Shubman Gill wasted no time in making a decisive call as Gujarat Titans captain in their IPL 2025 season opener against Punjab Kings. Winning the toss at the Narendra Modi Stadium, he opted to bowl first, citing three key reasons: the heavy dew observed during practice sessions, the lack of assistance for spinners, and the venue’s history of successful chases.

Punjab Kings’ newly appointed skipper, Shreyas Iyer, admitted that he, too, would have preferred to bowl first, considering that five of the last six IPL matches at this venue have been won by teams chasing. The franchise’s selection dilemmas resulted in the debut of two fresh talents—opener Priyansh Arya and all-rounder Suryansh Shedge.

Key Match Highlights:

  • Bowling Strengths on Display: Both teams boast world-class bowling attacks. Kagiso Rabada makes his debut for GT against his former team, while Marco Jansen, his South African teammate, represents PBKS.
  • Spin Challenge: Rashid Khan and Yuzvendra Chahal will headline the spin attacks, though they may struggle for assistance on this surface.
  • Impact Players in Play: GT has named only three overseas players in their initial XI, keeping Glenn Phillips or Sherfane Rutherford as a likely Impact Player. PBKS is expected to bring in either Vijaykumar Vyshak or Harpreet Brar when they bowl second.
