As India gears up for a high-stakes five-Test series against England, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has opened up about a major personal decision—turning down the opportunity to captain the Indian Test team.

In a heartfelt conversation with Dinesh Karthik on Sky Sports, Bumrah revealed that the BCCI had considered him for the role after Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the longest format. But despite the honour, Bumrah chose to step aside, citing long-term concerns around fitness, workload, and team continuity.

Why Bumrah Declined the Captaincy Role

Yes, the BCCI was looking at me for leadership,” Bumrah confirmed, “but I had spoken to my back specialist and the surgeon about how smart I need to be with my workload in a five-Test series.”

Bumrah explained that he personally called the BCCI, requesting not to be considered for captaincy. “I said, ‘I don’t want to be looked at in a leadership role because I won’t be able to give all the Test matches in a five-match series.’”

The concern wasn’t about personal ambition. It was about the team.

It’s not fair for the team if one captain plays three Tests and someone else leads for two. That’s not continuity. That’s not stability. And I’ve always wanted to put the team first.”

Shubman Gill Steps In

Following Bumrah’s decision, the baton of leadership has passed to Shubman Gill, who will lead India in the upcoming Test series starting June 20 at Headingley. Bumrah, however, made it clear that his role as a senior player and mentor will remain active.

I’m there for him whenever he needs me. If he wants to talk, I’ll always give him a quiet word. But I want him to feel free—to operate in his own way, with his own thinking. He’s young, energetic, and has his own process. That’s exactly how it should be.”

Cricket Over Captaincy

While admitting that captaincy “meant a lot” and that he had “worked very hard for it,” Bumrah said, “I love cricket more than captaincy. I want to contribute as a cricketer. Even if I’m not the captain, I can still lead in my own way.”

At just 30, Bumrah has already claimed 205 Test wickets in 45 matches—an astonishing feat for a bowler who operates in conditions often unfavourable to fast bowling. But years of managing back stress injuries and surgical recovery have taught him one key lesson: longevity demands restraint.

“I’m not becoming younger by the day. I want to play as long as I can in all three formats. So I have to be smart with how I handle my body.”

The Bigger Picture

Bumrah’s choice to step away from captaincy isn’t about avoiding responsibility—it’s about preserving his impact, ensuring that he can give his best to Indian cricket over the long term. As India begins a new era under Shubman Gill, Bumrah’s presence, wisdom, and support will be more valuable than ever.

And while he may not wear the captain’s armband, Bumrah is still very much a leader in every sense of the word.
