India Squad vs Sri Lanka 2024 Live Updates: A new chapter in Indian cricket is starting with the Sri Lanka tour as Gautam Gambhir becomes the new head coach. He has a big job ahead, taking over from Rahul Dravid, who led India to the finals in various ICC events and won the T20 World Cup in 2024.
Gambhir’s first task is to pick the team and captain for the Sri Lanka series. Senior players Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah are expected to miss the tour. With Kohli and Sharma retiring from T20Is, India is already in a transition phase, but the BCCI hasn’t announced a new captain for the shortest format yet.
Hardik Pandya, who was the vice-captain during the T20 World Cup, was expected to become the new captain. However, reports suggest that his Mumbai Indians teammate, Suryakumar Yadav, might get the role instead. Gambhir and Suryakumar share a good relationship from their time together at Kolkata Knight Riders.
KL Rahul is likely to return to the team for the ODI series against Sri Lanka and could lead the team in Rohit’s absence. Pandya, one of the key players in India’s T20 World Cup win, will take a break during the ODI series for personal reasons.

Shubman Gill, who recently led India to a T20I series win over Zimbabwe, might not continue as captain for the Sri Lanka tour, as senior players are expected to return.
The first T20I between India and Sri Lanka is on July 27, followed by two more T20 games on July 28 and July 30 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. The ODIs will start on August 2, with matches on August 4 and August 7 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
This will be India’s first white-ball tour to Sri Lanka since 2021, when Dravid was the stand-in coach and Shikhar Dhawan led a second-string team.
