It has been four games and four wins. However, Team India is yet to produce a complete performance with the bat in the ongoing T20 World Cup.
Unlike the dominance shown in bilateral series, the main course has fallen short of expectations. The “Men in Blue” have relied heavily on individual brilliance. Consequently, star players have had to bail them out of precarious situations in all four group games. Although the scorecard reads 4-0, the cracks in the armor could become fatal in the Super 8 stage.
On Wednesday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, it was Shivam Dube’s firepower that saved the day against the Netherlands.

Top Order Troubles: The Abhishek Sharma Worry
The biggest concern for India heading into the next round is the opening slot. Alarmingly, World No. 1 T20I batter Abhishek Sharma is yet to score a single run in the tournament.
His repeated failures have exposed Tilak Varma early to the new ball. Furthermore, Varma’s recent approach of farming the strike without showing aggressive intent has sucked momentum from the innings. Against the Netherlands, Varma and captain Suryakumar Yadav combined in the middle overs. Together, they scored just 30 runs off 28 deliveries. This lack of fluency is far from ideal against a disciplined Dutch attack.
Dube and Pandya: The Rescuers
Eventually, the runs dried up and Surya fell for a watchful 34. That is when Shivam Dube took matters into his own hands. Playing the role of a gladiator, Dube was impeccable.
He refused to fall into the trap of slower balls. Instead, Dube smashed six sixes and four boundaries on his way to a match-winning 66. Alongside Hardik Pandya, the pair added 76 runs off just 35 balls. As a result, they injected urgent momentum into a stagnant innings. This guided India to a competitive total of 193/6.
The Mystery Spin of Varun Chakravarthy
Chasing 194, the Netherlands put up a fight. They managed 176/7 in their 20 overs. While pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh handled the new ball well, it was Varun Chakravarthy who proved to be India’s trump card.
The mystery spinner picked up 3 wickets for just 14 runs. Consequently, the Dutch batters looked clueless against his bag of tricks.
The Road Ahead: Super 8 Challenges

India used as many as seven bowlers in the final group game. This was to ensure everyone is warm. However, the batting woes remain a significant issue. Lower-ranked teams have exposed India’s weakness. Therefore, stronger opponents like South Africa, West Indies, and Zimbabwe will not be as forgiving in the Super 8s.
India faces South Africa next on February 22. This match will serve as the true litmus test for the defending champions.
Brief Scores:
- India: 193/6 (Shivam Dube 66, Suryakumar Yadav 34; Logan van Beek 3/56)
- Netherlands: 176/7 (Bas de Leede 33; Varun Chakravarthy 3/14)
