Jay Shah

Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is set to become the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Greg Barclay, the current chairman, has decided not to continue after his term ends in November.

Greg Barclay, during a video call with ICC directors, including Cricket Australia’s Mike Baird, confirmed he won’t be running for a third term. Jay Shah, backed by cricket boards from England and Australia, has the support needed to take over as chairman when Barclay steps down in November.

Shah will be the fifth Indian to lead the ICC, following in the footsteps of Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar. At 35, Shah will also be the youngest chairman in ICC history.

The ICC’s election process involves 16 votes, with a simple majority of nine votes needed to win. Shah is well-liked among the voting members, making him a strong candidate. He still has one year left as BCCI secretary before a mandatory three-year break starting in October 2025. If he takes the ICC role, he will have four years left with the BCCI after his break.

The Impact of Jay Shah’s Leadership

Jay Shah becoming the ICC chairman could bring changes to the organization. During his time at the BCCI, he balanced tradition with modern ideas, keeping cricket’s history alive while pushing it to adapt to today’s fast-paced world. Under Shah’s leadership, the ICC might become more inclusive and expand its reach, especially in new markets.

One key area where Shah could make a difference is in how the ICC is run. With the chairman now needing just nine out of 16 votes to win, instead of a two-thirds majority, Shah’s election is almost certain due to his strong backing. His leadership style, a mix of assertiveness and diplomacy, is expected to boost transparency and efficiency in the ICC’s operations.
