KKR Back with a Bang, SRH in Freefall

Kolkata Knight Riders bounced back from their recent setback in Mumbai to register their first 200+ total of IPL 2025, demolishing Sunrisers Hyderabad by 80 runs at Eden Gardens. This was SRH’s biggest defeat by runs in IPL history and their third consecutive loss after a thundering start to the season.

KKR vice-captain Venkatesh Iyer led the charge with a blazing 29-ball 60, while Rinku Singh remained unbeaten with a fiery 32 off just 17 deliveries. Their partnership ensured a powerful finish, with KKR hammering 78 runs in the last five overs.

SRH Top Order Melts in Powerplay Firestorm

SRH’s top three — Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan — were blown away in just 13 balls. The trio collectively managed only 8 runs, marking SRH’s second-worst top-order collapse ever. Vaibhav Arora struck early, dismissing Head once again — a replay of the 2024 IPL final.

The pressure piled up as Harshit Rana and Andre Russell joined the carnage, and KKR’s spinners Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy applied the chokehold in the middle overs, conceding just 33 runs in five overs while grabbing two wickets.

Early Setback? No Problem for KKR

Despite a shaky start at 17/2, thanks to early dismissals of Narine (7) and Quinton de Kock (1), the middle-order trio of Ajinkya Rahane (38), Angkrish Raghuvanshi (50), and Venkatesh Iyer (60) rebuilt the innings. Their strokeplay was a mix of elegance and aggression, with Rahane pulling off vintage leg-side sixes and Raghuvanshi showcasing youthful flair.

The Venkatesh-Rinku Show

Once set, Rinku Singh and Venkatesh Iyer turned on the heat, ripping into Harshal Patel and Pat Cummins in the death overs. Venkatesh smashed four boundaries and two sixes in the 19th over, reaching his fifty in just 25 balls. Although he fell in the final over, the damage was done.

Rinku, meanwhile, played the perfect finisher, slamming three consecutive boundaries in the 17th over and a majestic six over long-on in the 18th.

Bowling Brilliance Seals the Deal

KKR’s bowling unit delivered a complete performance:

  • Vaibhav Arora: 3/29 (including the prized scalp of Klaasen)
  • Varun Chakaravarthy: 3/22
  • Sunil Narine: Economy spell that stifled the middle order
  • Harshit Rana & Russell: Early breakthroughs ensured SRH never recovered

SRH’s Aggression Strategy Backfires Again

Once again, SRH’s hyper-aggressive approach in the powerplay raised eyebrows. Their famed batting lineup couldn’t adapt to the conditions and collapsed under pressure. Heinrich Klaasen tried to anchor the chase but was eventually undone by Arora’s pace and bounce.
