In a crucial IPL 2025 encounter, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) set a commanding total of 205/5 against Rajasthan Royals (RR), driven by half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal. Despite losing the toss for the fourth consecutive time at home, RCB’s batting displayed resilience, with crucial contributions from their top and middle order.

RCB’s Strong Start
RCB’s innings began with an early setback when Phil Salt was dismissed cheaply, attempting a slog-sweep off Wanindu Hasaranga. However, a 95-run stand between Kohli and Padikkal ensured the innings regained momentum. Kohli, despite a rocky start, found his rhythm and played a measured knock, bringing up his half-century off just 32 balls. Padikkal, who had his share of luck, including being dropped twice, played with confidence and brought up his own fifty in the latter half of the innings.

Padikkal’s performance was a testament to his hard work and focus this season, as he credited the tactical insights from RCB’s support staff, particularly Dinesh Karthik and Andy Flower. His partnership with Kohli, where both ran hard between the wickets and executed smart placements, proved crucial in laying the foundation for a big total.

Middle Overs Drama
RCB was cruising towards a huge total, but a flurry of wickets brought RR back into the game. Kohli was dismissed after mistiming a lofted shot off Jofra Archer’s slower delivery, while Sandeep Sharma picked up two key wickets in quick succession—Padikkal and Rajat Patidar—both falling to mis-timed shots. With the innings stalling at 143/5 in the 17th over, RCB needed a late surge.

Late Charge from David and Sharma
This is where Tim David and Jitesh Sharma stepped up. The pair put together a rapid 42 runs in just 3.1 overs, providing RCB with the much-needed acceleration to post a total in excess of 200. Their quick-fire partnership ensured RCB had enough runs on the board for a competitive total.

Rajasthan Royals’ Bowling Woes
RR’s bowling, especially in the death overs, lacked consistency. While Archer and Sandeep had some success, Tushar Deshpande’s expensive spell and missed opportunities in the field proved costly. Despite a decent start, RR’s inability to maintain control at the backend of the innings allowed RCB to finish strong.

Looking Ahead
RCB’s 205/5 is the highest total at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium so far this season. Rajasthan Royals, despite picking up crucial wickets in the middle overs, will have to regroup and plan a chase, while RCB will be hoping to defend their total with some disciplined bowling in the second innings.
