On day one of the Rothesay County Championship match at Wantage Road, Lewis McManus led a remarkable recovery for Northamptonshire, scoring a vital 53 off 89 balls after his team was reduced to 67 for 6 before lunch. Despite early struggles, McManus’s resilience guided the tail through a challenging phase, allowing Northamptonshire to reach 238 all out, thanks in part to a spirited 43 from Liam Guthrie, his highest first-class score.

Lancashire’s bowlers, George Balderson (4 for 55) and Anderson Phillip (3 for 65), exploited plenty of bounce and movement to dismantle Northamptonshire’s top order, with the home side losing wickets rapidly. Ricardo Vasconcelos (39) was the only batter to look solid before falling to Phillip, leaving the hosts on the back foot.

Despite the collapse, McManus formed crucial partnerships, first with Harry Harrison (29), who struck a few boundaries, and later with Ben Sanderson (32 off 20 balls). McManus showed excellent form, particularly strong off his legs, and added 57 runs with Guthrie before he fell to a leading edge off Bailey, caught by Luke Wells.

After lunch, Guthrie continued to contribute, scoring with authority and adding a partnership with McManus. However, wickets continued to fall as Lancashire’s bowlers picked up the tail, including a stunning catch by Harrison to dismiss Lancashire’s top scorer, Keaton Jennings, who made a brisk 41.

Lancashire’s batting also faced some early challenges, with Marcus Harris (53*) and Matty Hurst (31) leading their recovery after losing a few quick wickets. Despite dropping some chances in the field, the visitors ended the day at 133 for 3, trailing Northamptonshire by 105 runs.
