Mumbai Indians (MI) find themselves in a rare situation—returning to action more than two weeks after their last match, and straight into a must-win encounter. If they beat Delhi Capitals (DC) on Wednesday, they will qualify for the playoffs. If they lose, they will be forced to depend on other results, including their final match against Punjab Kings (PBKS), to determine their fate.

DC, on the other hand, face elimination if they lose this match. Even if they win on Wednesday but lose their final league match against PBKS, they would need MI to also lose their last match to stay in contention. For a team that has lost four of its last five completed matches and is without Mitchell Starc, this is a steep climb.

MI’s Turning Point: Earlier Clash vs DC

Earlier in the season, MI had lost four of their first five matches before facing DC. That game in Delhi turned out to be a lifeline. Three run-outs in the last over sealed MI’s win and triggered a turnaround—six consecutive victories that put them back in the playoff race. Now, they find themselves against the same opponent at another critical juncture.

Players in the Spotlight: Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul

Since Jasprit Bumrah’s return from injury, MI’s bowling has looked much more formidable. He has bowled consistently across all phases—powerplay, middle overs, and the death. MI’s death-overs economy has improved significantly from 11.18 (without Bumrah) to 9.07 (with him). The last time he played against DC, it was only his second match after recovery. Now, he returns to Wankhede, where he has averaged just 12.88 this season.

KL Rahul, meanwhile, asked to open in DC’s last game and responded with an unbeaten century. Now he returns to Wankhede, where his IPL average is 63.40. Against MI, he averages 74.23 and strikes at 135.15, with six fifties and three centuries. He also enjoys strong head-to-head numbers against Bumrah, Chahar, and Boult.
