Michael Neser, often overlooked in Australia’s Test setup, delivered a sensational performance to dismantle Tasmania in their Sheffield Shield clash at Oval.

Replying to Queensland’s formidable first-innings total of 425 for 9 declared—anchored by Usman Khawaja’s 127 and Jack Hearne’s 74—Tasmania crumbled to 161 all out, largely due to Neser’s devastating spell of 6 for 37 in 15 overs. Forced to follow on, Tasmania ended day two at 70 for 1, still trailing by 194 runs.

Neser’s Game-Changing Spell

The 34-year-old pacer turned the match on its head with a fiery post-lunch burst, taking six wickets in just 39 balls. Tasmania had started strong at 86 without loss, with openers Nivethan Radhakrishnan (39) and Jake Weatherald (55) building a solid foundation. However, Neser struck immediately, removing Weatherald before running through Tasmania’s top order.

He claimed a wicket in each of his next three overs, trapping Radhakrishnan lbw and clean-bowling Beau Webster, leaving Tasmania reeling at 122 for 6. Mark Steketee later dismissed Radhakrishnan for 24 in Tasmania’s second innings, while Weatherald remained unbeaten on 39 at stumps.

Queensland in Command

Despite both teams starting the penultimate round at the bottom of the table, a big win could keep Queensland in contention for a place in the final against South Australia.

This dominant display comes as Neser continues his return from a hamstring injury suffered in November while playing for Australia A. Despite only playing two Tests—most recently against the West Indies in 2022—he remains a key figure in domestic cricket, waiting for another international opportunity behind Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Scott Boland.

With two days remaining, Queensland will look to push for an outright victory and keep their final hopes alive.
