In the New Zealand vs. Australia Wellington Test match, renowned spinner Nathan Lyon achieved a remarkable feat with the bat during Australia’s second innings. Lyon etched his name in history by becoming the first cricketer ever to accumulate 1500 Test runs without registering a single fifty or hundred.

During Australia’s second innings, Lyon, functioning as a nightwatchman, emerged as the top scorer with a notable contribution of 41 runs out of the team’s total of 164. His innings played a crucial role in setting a target of 369 runs for New Zealand, led by Tim Southee. Lyon’s performance included 6 boundaries and saw pivotal partnerships with Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green.

Notably, Nathan Lyon had also showcased his prowess with the ball in the first innings, claiming 4 wickets to help restrict New Zealand to a mere 179 runs. In the second innings, he continued his impressive form, securing 2 wickets from 16 overs.

At the close of Day 3, New Zealand, chasing 369, stood at 111/3 with Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell at the crease, having built a partnership of 52 runs. Ravindra remained unbeaten on 56, with New Zealand banking on strong performances from Tom Blundell and Glenn Phillips to secure victory.

Reflecting on the day’s play, Lyon commended the quality of Test cricket and praised the performance of New Zealand’s Glenn, acknowledging his five-wicket haul. Lyon also lauded the batting display of Ravindra, foreseeing a bright future for the young talent.

With 523 wickets to his credit, Lyon currently ranks 7th in the list of highest wicket-takers in Test cricket history.
