Veteran talent scout and former national selector Patrick Moroney has officially been named the new convenor selector for the South Africa cricket men’s team. Set to begin his role on August 1, Moroney will oversee his first assignment during South Africa’s upcoming white-ball tour of Australia starting August 10. With over two decades of experience in player development and team selection — including recent success leading the Under-19 selection panel for last year’s World Cup — Moroney brings deep insight and a proven eye for emerging talent. His appointment marks a significant strategic shift for South Africa cricket, aiming to provide more structured support to the national coaching staff as they navigate a new era of high-performance expectations.

Deep Roots in the South Africa Cricket System

Moroney’s connection with South Africa cricket runs deep. His involvement in the selection ecosystem dates back to 2001. Over the years, he has worked closely with the South African National Academy, emerging squads, and previously served as a national selector. He was also shortlisted for the top selection role in 2019 but eventually served alongside Victor Mpitsang as part of the panel.

Most recently, Moroney served as the convenor selector for South Africa’s Under-19 men’s team, helping build the squad that competed in last year’s ICC U19 World Cup. Promising talents like Kwena Maphaka and Lhuan-dre Pretorius were among his standout picks.

Strategic Shift After a Period of Coach-Led Selection

This marks the first time current head coach Shukri Conrad will collaborate with a dedicated selection convenor. Since his appointment in January 2023, South Africa had operated without a formal selection panel. Enoch Nkwe, CSA’s Director of Cricket, had dissolved the previous committee — which included Moroney, Mpitsang, the national coach, and captain — and handed full squad selection duties to the head coaches.

While the intent was to streamline decision-making, the absence of broader selection support raised concerns. Moroney’s appointment now addresses that gap. Nkwe emphasized the need for more “eyes on the ground” to support coaches, especially with the recent shift toward an all-format coaching model.

Aiming for Balance and Accountability

Coach Conrad welcomed the addition of a selector, expressing hope that he would work with someone “like-minded” and committed to the growth of South Africa cricket. The move also comes after some contentious selection decisions in recent years. For instance, the panel’s choice to change a winning XI during the 2022 England Test series was widely criticized. That decision — which included selecting a spinner on a seam-friendly Old Trafford pitch — contributed to a series loss.

Despite controversies, the panel, including Moroney, made bold calls that paid off. One standout was the selection of an unknown Marco Jansen, who has since become a mainstay across all formats for South Africa.

Addressing Past Criticism and Future Aspirations

Former white-ball coach Rob Walter faced scrutiny for fielding a squad with only one Black African player during the 2024 T20 World Cup, even though South Africa reached the final. These concerns, along with the pressure to diversify and develop the pipeline, have reignited the need for a dedicated selector.

With Conrad now handling responsibilities across all formats, the CSA board saw it fit to bring back a convenor — though not a full selection panel — to share the workload and offer strategic input.

What’s Next for Moroney and South Africa Cricket?

Patrick Moroney steps into this role at a crucial time. As South Africa prepares for tours, ICC tournaments, and a push to reassert its dominance in world cricket, his expertise in talent identification and balanced selection will be key. CSA’s decision reflects a broader strategy to stabilize leadership, strengthen accountability, and ensure that team-building isn’t left solely in the hands of coaching staff.
