Punjab Kings (PBKS) head coach Ricky Ponting, a seasoned IPL coach since 2014, called the team’s 16-run victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a low-scoring thriller “just about the best win” of his IPL coaching career. The win, which saw PBKS defend a modest 111 runs (the lowest total ever defended in IPL history), could prove to be a “season-defining moment” for the team.
Ponting Reflects on the Thrilling Win:
“The heart rate’s still up a bit for me — it’s probably up over 200,” Ponting commented after the match. “I don’t need many of those games like that at my age of over 50 now.” He acknowledged the unpredictability of the game, saying, “Only three days ago, we couldn’t defend 246, and here we are, defending 112 with 16 runs up our sleeves. Small chases like this are sometimes the hardest.”
Chahal’s Heroic Performance:
One of the match’s standout performances came from Yuzvendra Chahal, who delivered an outstanding bowling spell despite carrying a shoulder injury. Before the game, Ponting checked with Chahal, asking him if he was fit to play. Chahal responded confidently, “Coach, I’m 100% alright, let me out there.” Ponting was thrilled with Chahal’s performance, stating, “What about Chahal tonight! How good a spell of bowling was that!”
Strategic Adjustments:
At the innings break, Ponting highlighted how PBKS had made crucial tactical changes. Normally, Arshdeep Singh would bowl the new ball, but the team swapped it for Marco Jansen and Xavier Bartlett due to favorable matchups. “We changed things up with the ball,” Ponting explained. “Jansen took the first over, and Bartlett took the second.”
Proud of the Team’s Second Half:

Despite a poor performance with the bat, Ponting expressed immense pride in how the team fought back in the second half. “Even if we had lost that game, I couldn’t have been more proud of the way we went about the second half,” he said.
Shreyas Iyer’s Take on the Victory:
PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer, who was visibly emotional after the win, reflected on the challenging pitch conditions and the team’s collective effort. “I was just backing my instincts,” he said. “The pitch had variable bounce, so we had that at the back of our mind, and we discussed with the bowlers to stay in the stumps as much as possible, and they executed the plans really well.”
PBKS’ Rise in the Points Table:
With this win, PBKS moved up to fourth on the points table, keeping their playoff hopes alive with a solid team performance.
