Ryan Rickelton finally found his rhythm in the IPL 2025, scoring an unbeaten 62 off 41 balls, which helped Mumbai Indians (MI) to an eight-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). After struggling in his first two innings, scoring just 13 and 6, this innings came as a huge relief for the South African batter, both personally and for his team.

Rickelton, who opened the batting alongside Rohit Sharma, faced significant pressure, given the expectations placed on him as one of the four overseas players in the squad. Reflecting on his performance, he said, “The pressure factor internally is big, but externally, it’s huge.”

The Pressure of IPL Cricket

Opening the batting for a high-profile team like MI is always going to come with pressure, and Rickelton wasn’t shy about acknowledging it. The weight of the IPL, with its high standards and constant scrutiny, was something he had to adjust to quickly.

He shared, “Obviously, opening the batting for Mumbai Indians with Rohit Sharma, there’s always going to be pressure internally and externally.” Despite the nerves, Rickelton was determined to contribute. “I wanted to get a score and ease the nerves down,” he added.

Training and Adaptability: The Subcontinental Approach

Rickelton’s experience in the Champions Trophy earlier this year, where he scored a brilliant 103 off 106 balls against Afghanistan in Karachi, proved valuable when adapting to the conditions in India. His approach against spin, which was particularly effective in the subcontinent, caught the attention of MI’s batting coach, Sanjay Bangar.

Bangar remarked, “The impressive part for me was how he batted in the Champions Trophy. He was very good against spin. Stays low. Quite subcontinental in his approach.” This technique was key when Rickelton faced the tricky conditions at Wankhede Stadium, where the pitch offered some early movement for the bowlers.

Adjusting to the Challenges of IPL Cricket

In his first two IPL games, Rickelton faced some challenging wickets. However, he remained focused on finding his way through the early difficulties. “The first two games were tricky, on some tough wickets, but to get out here in Mumbai, have Spencer [Johnson] turn me inside out was quite a tough battle to get through. But once I managed to get through that, it was really pleasing to get a score,” Rickelton explained.

Despite the challenges, his confidence grew once he found a rhythm, and he was able to steer MI towards victory, chasing down KKR’s modest total with ease.

Raising Intensity and Team Effort

Though Rickelton’s knock was crucial, he emphasized that MI’s overall performance contributed to the win. “Hardik [Pandya] was more emphasizing today to raise [the] intensity – ‘this is our home ground, we need to be better.’ I think we ramped it up a level. The intensity was better. The fielding – I know we dropped a couple of catches – was better as well, and obviously, the batting came through nicely as well.”

Rickelton highlighted that the victory was a result of the collective effort, and not just his individual performance.

Mental Challenges of IPL

Rickelton was candid about the mental challenges of playing in the IPL, where the intensity is unmatched. “The IPL’s a different beast on its own. To mentally get my head around that is a different one for me,” he shared. He also appreciated the support from his teammates, stating, “Luckily, I’ve got a few familiar faces around as well, which makes that transition a bit easier.”

As he continues to find his way in the IPL, Rickelton will look to build on his successful innings and make more match-winning contributions for MI.

Looking Ahead: More to Prove

While Rickelton’s fifty was a breakthrough, he knows it’s just the start. “To mentally get my head around the IPL and try to adjust my game to give me the best chance to succeed, it’s not easy,” Rickelton concluded. But with a first half-century now under his belt, he’s confident that the road ahead will be smoother.
