Mumbai Indians (MI) delivered a thumping nine-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025, riding on stellar fifties from Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav. Chasing 177 at the Wankhede, MI got the job done with 26 balls to spare, not only bagging their third consecutive win but also giving a significant boost to their Net Run Rate (NRR).

CSK’s Cautious Start Costs Them Dear

Opting to bat on a belter of a track where 430 runs had been scored earlier this season, CSK surprisingly played a conservative brand of cricket. It took them three overs to hit a boundary, and they went 27 balls during the middle overs without even attempting one. Ravindra Jadeja (53*) and Shivam Dube (50) stitched together a partnership, but the team never looked aggressive enough to push for a 200+ total.

17-year-old debutant Ayush Mhatre was a bright spot, scoring a lively 32 off 15 and injecting brief energy into an otherwise slow innings. But once he departed, MI’s bowlers – especially Bumrah (2/25) and Santner (0/15) – regained control.

Rohit and SKY Shine Bright

Rohit Sharma, returning to form, smashed an unbeaten 76 off 45 balls, marking his first fifty of the season. Partnering with Ryan Rickelton, he gave MI their first half-century opening stand of the tournament.

Suryakumar Yadav then took charge. After arriving at the crease post Rickelton’s dismissal, he tore into CSK’s spinners – particularly Ravindra Jadeja – with innovative sweeps and stylish strokes. He ended with a blistering 68* off 33 balls, hitting 3 sixes and 7 fours.

Together, Rohit and SKY chased down the target with ease, taking MI to 8 points from 8 matches and reviving their playoff hopes.

Key Highlights:

  • Rohit Sharma scores first IPL 2025 fifty; MI’s top opening stand of the season
  • Suryakumar Yadav hammers Jadeja with a flurry of sweeps, finishes on 68*
  • Ayush Mhatre, CSK’s youngest-ever debutant, impresses with 32 (15)
  • Jasprit Bumrah & Mitchell Santner choke CSK in death overs
  • MI win with 4.2 overs to spare
