Former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond has raised concerns about Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness, stressing that another back injury in the same spot where he previously had surgery could be a career-ending setback.
Bumrah’s Injury Woes Continue
Bumrah has been out of action since the New Year’s Test in Sydney, where he left the field for scans. Initially reported as back spasms, the injury was later diagnosed as a stress-related issue, forcing him to miss the Champions Trophy. Currently, he is undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, but his availability for IPL 2025 remains uncertain.
Bond’s Perspective on Bumrah’s Recovery

Shane Bond, who had his own career cut short by recurring back problems, understands the risks associated with Bumrah’s injury. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, he emphasized the importance of workload management.
“When he went off for scans, I suspected it was more than just a sprain,” Bond said. “Another injury in the same spot could be devastating. India needs to be careful with how they manage him, especially transitioning from IPL to Test cricket.”
Transitioning from IPL to Tests: A Risk Factor
One of Bond’s biggest concerns is the tight scheduling. With India set to play a five-Test series in England starting in June, just a month after the IPL ends, the shift from T20 to red-ball cricket poses a serious challenge.
“In T20 cricket, bowlers don’t get the same workload as in Tests,” Bond explained. “If you’re playing three IPL matches in a week, you might bowl just 20 overs. But in Tests, that load can double in just one innings. This sudden increase puts immense strain on the body.”
Managing Bumrah’s Workload in England

Bond suggested that India should be cautious about overburdening Bumrah during the England tour. Last year, he bowled 151.2 overs across five Tests in Australia, including a taxing 52 overs in the Boxing Day Test.
“I wouldn’t want him playing more than two consecutive Tests in England,” Bond stated. “He’s too valuable for India’s long-term plans, including the next World Cup. If another injury occurs in the same spot, it could be a career-ender.”
Bumrah’s Role in IPL 2025
With the Indian domestic season over, the IPL is Bumrah’s only chance to return to competitive cricket before the England series. However, Bond believes his participation is still uncertain.
