Ravi Shastri, the former India head coach, has heaped praise on Washington Sundar following his standout performance in the third Test at Lord’s. Shastri highlighted Sundar’s calm temperament and adaptability, saying that the 25-year-old has the potential to become a genuine all-rounder for India. According to Ravi Shastri, consistency and fitness will be key in shaping Sundar into a reliable asset across formats. His confidence in Sundar reflects the growing belief in India’s next generation of cricketers—something Ravi Shastri has always been vocal about.
First Impressions of Washington Sundar
Sundar made his Test debut during the memorable Gabba victory against Australia in 2021. Since then, he has only played 11 Tests, scoring 545 runs and taking 30 wickets.

Missed Opportunities and Red-Ball Potential
According to Shastri, Sundar should have been given more chances in red-ball cricket. He noted that the all-rounder has the skillset to thrive on Indian pitches that support spin.
“He again is just 25 years of age. I think he should have played a lot more Test cricket,” said Shastri.
“On turning tracks in India, he can be lethal—as New Zealand found out during their 2024 tour. He out-bowled senior spinners in that series, taking 16 wickets in four innings.”
Batting Skills Beyond His Position
Despite often batting lower in the order, Sundar has showcased strong batting skills. In his four innings during the England Test series, he scored 42, 12*, 23, and 0, while also taking five wickets.
Shastri was especially impressed by Sundar’s debut knock—a composed 62 under pressure in his first innings at the Gabba.
He later followed it with unbeaten scores of 85 and 96 against England at home, showing his calmness and technique.
Sundar’s Batting Average and Future Role
Sundar has batted at No. 7 or lower in 10 out of his 11 Test appearances. Yet, he holds a batting average of 38.92 and has already hit four half-centuries.
“He’s a naturally talented batsman,” said Shastri.
“He’s no number 8. He can go at No. 6 very soon in the batting lineup.”
Overseas Impact and Lord’s Performance
Shastri believes Sundar has the ability to succeed even in overseas conditions.
He praised the youngster’s drift, control, and ability to bowl long spells.
At Lord’s, despite India’s narrow defeat, Sundar delivered a standout second-innings performance. He picked up 4/22, removing key batters like Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Jamie Smith.
“And once he gains confidence, he’ll get better and better,” Shastri added.
“He’s got the strength, control, and fitness to bowl long spells and do the containing job when needed.”
