South Africa has called up left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder George Linde as a traveling reserve for the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy. He will serve as cover for Aiden Markram, who sustained a right hamstring injury while fielding against England and remained off the field for the rest of the match.

Markram’s Injury Woes and South Africa’s Growing Injury List

Markram will undergo a fitness test during training on Tuesday evening to determine his availability for the semi-final against New Zealand. His injury adds to South Africa’s growing list of sidelined players, which already includes key fast bowlers Anrich Nortje, Gerald Coetzee, Nandre Burger, and Lizaad Williams, all of whom were ruled out before the tournament began.

Linde’s Potential Role in the Squad

Although Linde has been called up, he will not be officially replacing Markram unless the latter is ruled out and the ICC’s event technical committee approves the swap. The move appears strategic, as South Africa may require an extra spinner if they qualify for the final in Dubai, where conditions favor spin bowling.

The current South African squad includes two specialist spinners, Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi, but only Maharaj has experience playing in Pakistan. In contrast, India played four spinners in their most recent match against New Zealand in Dubai, showcasing the importance of spin in those conditions.

Linde’s Recent Form and Contributions

Linde has been in solid form, playing a crucial role in MI Cape Town’s title-winning campaign in the 2025 SA20. He scored 161 runs at a strike rate of 153.33 and took 11 wickets at an economy rate of 6.29 in 11 games. More recently, in the One-Day Challenge Division One for Western Province, he accumulated 106 runs and claimed four wickets in five matches.

Meanwhile, left-arm pacer Kwena Maphaka is also with the squad as a traveling reserve. On a positive note, Temba Bavuma and Tony de Zorzi have recovered from illness and are set to resume training.

What’s Next for South Africa?

With uncertainty over Markram’s availability, South Africa faces a crucial test in the semi-final against New Zealand. If they make it to the final, the inclusion of an extra spinner like Linde could play a pivotal role in their title aspirations.
