In a dramatic spin-dominated clash at Chepauk, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were restricted to a mere 103 for 9 — their third-lowest total in IPL history and the lowest ever at their iconic home ground.
But this time, it wasn’t CSK’s famous spin trio calling the shots. It was Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), with Varun Chakravarthy, Sunil Narine, and a surprise package in Moeen Ali, who spun a web around the Chennai batters. The trio combined to produce devastating figures: 12 overs, 1 maiden, 55 runs, and 6 wickets — effectively choking the life out of the CSK innings.
Dhoni Returns, But Nothing Goes Right
With regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad ruled out of the season due to injury, MS Dhoni returned to lead the side. He won the toss and chose to bat, but that was the only moment CSK had control. What followed was a clinical takedown.
KKR’s game plan was textbook T20 strategy: bowl spin early and strangle the batters on a slow, black-soil pitch. Moeen Ali was brought in specifically to target CSK’s left-handers — a move that paid off instantly when he bowled a maiden and dismissed Devon Conway. CSK could only manage 31 for 2 in the powerplay, their second-lowest of the season, following a similarly dismal 30 for 3 vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

CSK Collapse: No Boundaries, No Momentum
The struggles continued. Boundaries dried up — just three were hit after the 8th over, one of which was a top edge. Desperate to boost their batting, CSK brought in Deepak Hooda as an Impact Player, sacrificing a bowling option. But Hooda fell for a duck, and CSK’s woes deepened with the absence of Matheesha Pathirana, who was unavailable for this match.
Even the legendary MS Dhoni couldn’t rescue the innings. Coming in at No. 9, he was immediately tested by Narine and Chakravarthy, both of whom have historically troubled him. Dhoni fell for just 1 off 4 balls, controversially given out LBW despite what appeared to be a spike on UltraEdge. Third umpire Vinod Seshan stood by the on-field decision, prompting visible frustration from Stephen Fleming, who left the dugout to challenge the call with match officials.
To add injury to insult, Shivam Dube appeared to suffer a leg injury in the final over, leaving CSK further handicapped heading into the second innings.
