Mohammed Shami’s performance in IPL 2025 has raised serious concerns, with the fast bowler’s inconsistency becoming a major talking point. Despite his reputation as a reliable bowler, Shami has struggled to find his rhythm this season, and his numbers are far from impressive.

Earlier this month, Shami came dangerously close to breaking an unwanted IPL record for the most expensive four-over spell, conceding 75 runs against Punjab Kings (PBKS), just one run less than Jofra Archer’s record of 76 runs for Rajasthan Royals (RR) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Shami’s form has continued to dip, and his performance against Gujarat Titans (GT) further highlighted his ongoing struggles. In the game against GT, Shami went for 48 runs in three overs without taking a wicket, leaving his season tally at six wickets from nine matches at an alarming average of 56.17 and an economy rate of 11.23.

Aakash Chopra has voiced strong concerns over Shami’s form, especially with India’s upcoming Test tour of England in mind. Chopra pointed out that it’s not as if Shami had just returned from injury; he had time to regain his form, yet he continues to falter. “If he’s still off the boil, and that has something to do with the injury – and we’re all assuming that it is – then there is a serious question mark with regards to what happens next,” Chopra said. The question remains whether Shami will be part of the England tour and what kind of form he will bring if selected.

Danny Morrison also raised doubts, mentioning that after undergoing surgery and with age not on his side, Shami may be struggling psychologically and physically. “You’ve had a big surgery like that, I think psychologically for a start, it gets you down,” said Morrison.

Shami’s struggles have been apparent throughout IPL 2025, where he has not been able to consistently get his lines and lengths right—something that has traditionally been his strength. Shami has also failed to get his pace back to the levels he was once known for, leaving him vulnerable to being taken to the cleaners in T20 cricket. With a lack of control and poor execution, his future in both the IPL and the national team is in question.
