Mumbai Indians’ young batter Tilak Varma became the fourth player in IPL history to be retired out, during a tense chase against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Friday. Chasing a steep 204-run target, MI needed 24 runs off the last 7 balls when Tilak walked off the field after scoring 25 off 23 balls.
A Tactical Call in Crunch Time
Tilak had come in as an Impact Player, but struggled to find momentum throughout his innings. At the post-match press conference, Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene explained the surprising decision.

He added that while the decision wasn’t easy, it was purely tactical, and aimed at giving MI a better chance to chase the total. Unfortunately, Mumbai Indians fell short by 12 runs, with LSG sealing the win in the final over.
Partnership with Surya and the Turning Point
Tilak had partnered with Suryakumar Yadav during the middle overs, stitching together a 66-run stand off 48 balls. However, Suryakumar’s contribution was a fiery 46 off 30, while Tilak’s innings lacked fluency. By the time Surya got out, the required run rate had surged, putting pressure back on MI.
In his final five balls, Tilak managed only eight runs — including a lucky four via an edge — before MI opted to send in a new batter. At the other end stood captain Hardik Pandya, who later backed the move during a post-match interview.
A Rare Occurrence in IPL
Retiring a batter out remains a rare event in cricket, especially in the IPL. Tilak now joins the short list of players who’ve been strategically pulled out during an innings. With this incident, teams might be more open to using the rule in crunch situations, especially in high-stakes T20 matches.
