Umpire hit by flying bat: - Watch

New Delhi: A surprising incident has sparked new talks about safety in cricket. An on-field umpire was hit in the leg by a flying bat during a player’s celebration.

The video of this event has gone viral, showing the dangers umpires can face.

The incident happened in a recent match when a batter, excited after hitting the winning six, threw his bat into the air to celebrate.

The umpire, standing on the other end of the pitch, was about to signal the six when the bat hit his leg, causing him obvious pain. The batter had started celebrating before the umpire could finish his signal for the six.

Cricket, like many sports, can lead to injuries, so players wear a lot of protective gear. Batters use helmets, pads, gloves, arm guards, and thigh pads. Wicketkeepers wear gloves to catch fast balls. Umpires have also started using protective gear, thanks to Australian umpire Bruce Oxenford.

Oxenford created a special arm guard shaped like a lollipop to protect his left arm. He first used it in a 2015 World T20 warm-up match and later in the IPL. The device has a black arm attachment and a clear shield. Even though Oxenford finds it useful, not many other umpires use it. Some, like fellow Australian John Ward, prefer regular helmets.
