The Indian cricket team made history on Sunday, sealing their first-ever Test victory at Edgbaston, Birmingham, and ending a 58-year wait at the famous venue. India crushed England by 336 runs to level the five-match series 1-1 in emphatic style.
After the match, Virat Kohli took to social media to applaud the team’s remarkable performance, reserving his highest praise for captain Shubman Gill and acknowledging the standout efforts of Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj.
“Great victory for India at Edgbaston. Fearless and kept pushing England to the wall. Brilliantly led by Shubman with the bat and in the field and impactful performances from everyone. Special mention to Siraj and Akash for the way they bowled on this pitch,” Kohli wrote on X.

A Historic Batting Display
Gill was the undisputed star of the match. The young captain smashed 269 in the first innings and followed it up with 161 in the second, becoming the first batter in Test history to record scores of 250 and 150 in the same match.
He now has three centuries in his first two Tests as captain, underlining a remarkable start to his leadership tenure.
Akash Deep’s Breakthrough Performance
India’s decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah opened the door for Akash Deep, who delivered a career-defining performance.
The 28-year-old quick claimed 4 for 88 in the first innings and a superb 6 for 99 in the second to finish with match figures of 10 for 147—the best of his eight-Test career so far.
His relentless accuracy and ability to extract movement kept England under constant pressure, proving decisive on a flat pitch.
Siraj’s Impact
Mohammed Siraj also played a crucial role, picking up a six-wicket haul (6 for 70) in the first innings before adding another scalp in the second. His aggression and discipline with the old ball complemented Akash Deep perfectly.
England’s Lone Resistance
For England, wicketkeeper Jamie Smith was the lone bright spot in the second innings. He followed his unbeaten 184 in the first innings with a fighting 88, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a crushing defeat.
A Special Win for India
The victory ended India’s nine-match winless streak at Edgbaston, which included seven losses and a draw.
More importantly, it was a personal triumph for Shubman Gill. Under his leadership, India not only secured a historic win but also laid down a marker for the rest of the series.
