Presence Raises Eyebrows Ahead of Headingley Test
Indian Test legend VVS Laxman has been seen in close proximity to the Indian team in England over the past two days. However, his presence has sparked curiosity, as there has been no official communication from the BCCI confirming any formal role or assignment for him on the current tour.
No Assignment from BCCI Confirmed
Laxman currently heads the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy (Centre of Excellence) in Bengaluru. Despite being a vital figure in India’s cricketing ecosystem, sources have clarified that he is not serving any official capacity with the Indian team on this tour.
“He has gone there for some other purpose, not on any assignment with the Indian team. He travelled to London from Lausanne,” a BCCI official revealed.
Another insider added:
“He may have interacted with the coaches and selectors and possibly attended the intra-squad match, but he holds no formal role with the touring party.”
A Familiar Face in English Conditions
Laxman’s presence, however, comes with deep cricketing context. The elegant right-hander has played 34 first-class matches in England, including 16 for Lancashire and several games for Indian touring teams against county sides. He was a key part of India’s Test squads during three tours — in 2002, 2007, and 2011.
One source close to Laxman mentioned:
“He simply stopped by London to spend time with the boys. It was always part of his travel plan.”
Gautam Gambhir to Rejoin Squad Before Headingley Test
Meanwhile, head coach Gautam Gambhir is expected to rejoin the team ahead of the first Test at Headingley. Gambhir had returned to Delhi to be with his mother, who was recently hospitalized.
“He will definitely rejoin the team before the first Test. His mother’s condition has improved though she remains in the ICU,” a source close to Gambhir said.
Match Schedule and Final Prep
India recently wrapped up a practice match against India A in Beckenham. The players will observe a rest day on June 16, before traveling to Leeds on June 17 to kickstart final preparations.
