In a dramatic contest between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Tuesday night, it was a combination of tactical brilliance and some erratic bowling that determined the outcome. While Punjab’s Vijaykumar Vyshak delivered a game-changing performance, Mohammed Siraj’s decision-making faltered under pressure.
Despite being a seasoned international bowler, Siraj struggled to find his rhythm, conceding 54 runs in four overs without taking a wicket. His final over of the PBKS innings, where he went for 23 runs, highlighted his missteps. His delivery sequence, mixing short, wide, and full deliveries, allowed Shashank Singh to take advantage and hit multiple boundaries.
Siraj’s Struggles and Mistakes
Varun Aaron pointed out that Siraj’s poor performance wasn’t a sign of a long-term decline but an off day. “Yes, Siraj has been a bit expensive in the beginning, but he can also win you games with the ball,” Aaron said. “Tonight, his decision-making towards the end wasn’t the best.”
Ambati Rayudu also added that Siraj’s failure to trust his natural bowling style, particularly his inswing deliveries, played a part in his disappointing performance. “He bowled too many outswingers, and that’s not his strength,” Rayudu said.
Vyshak’s Tactical Brilliance Turns the Tide
In contrast, Vyshak made a significant impact for PBKS after being brought in at the right moment. Punjab waited until the 13th over of GT’s chase to substitute Vyshak for Priyansh Arya, just after Arshdeep Singh had dismissed Sai Sudharsan. GT made their impact substitution moments earlier, bringing in Sherfane Rutherford, a left-hander. Vyshak’s introduction in the 15th over helped stem the flow of runs, conceding just five runs in his first two overs.
Shreyas Iyer’s quick decision to bring Vyshak on was a masterstroke. “Vyshak’s entry was the turning point,” Rayudu said, and PBKS benefitted from his death bowling skills. Vyshak’s yorkers and knuckleballs restricted GT’s scoring ability, and he played a key role in keeping the chase within reach.

Ricky Ponting praised Iyer’s calm leadership, acknowledging the strategic brilliance behind Vyshak’s introduction. “I sent a message to Shreyas, ‘Just get Vyshak out here; he’ll nail a couple of overs of yorkers, and we’ll close the game,'” Ponting shared. Vyshak’s control during the middle overs ensured PBKS could maintain pressure on GT, leaving them with no room to recover.
In the end, while Siraj struggled with his decision-making, Vyshak’s impact proved to be the difference, helping PBKS close out the game with a well-executed plan and a clinical finish.
