A controversial run-out decision involving Shubman Gill sparked debate during Gujarat Titans’ (GT) match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2025. The dismissal occurred in the 13th over when Gill was run out following a throw from short fine-leg by Harshal Patel. While the TV umpire ultimately gave Gill out, Aakash Chopra, analyzing the situation, stated that “there was enough doubt” to have turned the appeal down.
Here’s how it unfolded: GT’s second-wicket partnership between Gill and Jos Buttler had just crossed 60 runs, taking their team to 149. On a delivery from Zeeshan Ansari, Buttler flicked the ball behind square on the leg side, and both batters set off for a single. However, as the throw came in, Gill had to stretch to reach the striker’s end, where wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen, standing adjacent to the stumps, seemed to get quite close to them with his right hand just as the ball appeared to hit the stumps.

Chopra highlighted that the key issue was whether the bails were dislodged by the ball or Klaasen’s gloves. He pointed out that in today’s cricket, simply hitting the stumps with the ball isn’t enough; there has to be clear evidence that the ball caused the bails to come off. Chopra emphasized that in previous instances, even when bowlers like Jofra Archer bowl at high speeds, the ball may hit the stumps but the bails do not always come off.
The TV umpire, Michael Gough, had difficulty making a definitive call initially. He requested further replays to check the trajectory of the ball and whether it had changed direction after passing Klaasen’s gloves, potentially deflecting onto the stumps. The replays suggested the ball might have altered course, but the critical question remained: which came first—the ball or the gloves hitting the stumps?
Chopra felt that there was enough doubt to suggest that it wasn’t the ball that dislodged the bails. “The zing lights didn’t come on when the stumps were hit, and Klaasen’s glove was very close to them, possibly causing the disturbance,” he explained. Despite the uncertainty, Gill was given out, and he expressed his displeasure with the decision both during his walk back to the dugout and after the match when speaking to the officials.
The dismissal didn’t significantly impact GT’s total, as they still managed to post an above-par 224/6 and later restricted SRH to 186/6, securing a crucial win. However, the controversy over the run-out added to the drama of the match.
