Sri Lanka Cricket suspends star wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella for doping violation in LPL 2024

The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has suspended experienced wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella indefinitely after he failed a doping test during the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024. The test was conducted by the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency (SLADA) as part of SLC’s effort to keep the sport clean.

Niroshan, who is 31 years old, will not be allowed to play any form of cricket until further notice. His last international match was a Test against New Zealand in March 2023. Although he was part of the T20I series against Bangladesh earlier this year, he didn’t get to play. Recently, he captained the Galle Marvels in the LPL 2024, leading them to the finals, where they were defeated by Jaffna Kings.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced that experienced wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella has failed a doping test conducted by the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency (SLADA). Following the failed test, Dickwella has been suspended immediately and will remain suspended until further notice, according to an official SLC statement. The test took place during the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024 as part of SLC’s commitment to uphold the integrity of cricket.

These testing efforts are done in partnership with the Ministry of Sports and follow guidelines set by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The main aim is to ensure that cricket stays free from the use of banned substances. By conducting these random tests during domestic tournaments, SLC and the related authorities work to protect the sport from any anti-doping violations.

Born in Kandy, Dickwella made his debut for the national team in July 2014. Over his career, he has scored 4,841 runs in 137 international matches, which include two centuries and 32 fifties. Previously, SLC had suspended him for breaching bio-security protocols during the England tour in 2021.
