Injury Blow for New Zealand

New Zealand’s Tom Latham has been ruled out of the ODI series against Pakistan after fracturing his right hand during training. Michael Bracewell will continue as captain, while Henry Nicholls has been called up as a replacement.

Latham, who was set to lead the side with Mitchell Santner away at the IPL, suffered the injury earlier this week, with x-rays confirming the extent of the damage.

Squad Adjustments and New Call-Ups

With Latham out, Mitch Hay will take over wicketkeeping duties, while Will Young will leave the squad after the first match to be with his family for the birth of his first child. In his place, Rhys Mariu, an uncapped batter with an impressive first-class average of 61.73, has been called up as batting cover.

Head coach Gary Stead acknowledged the challenges of multiple player unavailabilities but emphasized that these changes provide opportunities for emerging talent.

“It’s disappointing to lose Tom as captain on the eve of the series, but Michael has done a great job leading the T20I side. We wish Tom a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing Henry and Rhys contribute to the squad.”

The series will also see the previously uncapped pair of Muhammad Abbas and Nick Kelly making their debuts, while Kane Williamson has opted out of the tour.
