t20 world cup 2026

In a groundbreaking moment for Italian cricket, Italy have officially qualified for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, set to take place in India and Sri Lanka. This marks Italy’s debut in any cricket World Cup, a major milestone for the team and the sport’s growth in Europe.

Surprisingly, Italy secured their spot despite a loss to the Netherlands in The Hague. A superior net run-rate worked in their favor, allowing them to edge out Jersey—who had pulled off a dramatic win against Scotland earlier in the day. With this qualification, Italy becomes one of the 20 teams set to compete in what promises to be an electrifying T20 World Cup 2026.

How it unfolded:

  • Italy batted first and were in early trouble at 46 for 4, but Ben Manenti and the lower order lifted them to a respectable 134 for 7.
  • The Netherlands chased down the target in 16.2 overs, but Italy had already done enough to qualify by ensuring the defeat wasn’t heavy.
  • With both Italy and Jersey tied on points, Italy’s superior net run-rate saw them through.

Other highlights:

  • Netherlands joined Italy in qualifying, topping the regional final.
  • Scotland—regulars at the last four T20 World Cups—were knocked out after losing to Jersey in a nail-biting finish.
  • Despite Jersey’s memorable win over Scotland, results elsewhere meant they were also eliminated.

Fifteen teams have now booked their place in the 2026 T20 World Cup, with more qualifiers to come from the Africa and East-Asia Pacific regions.

Italy’s achievement marks a landmark moment for European associate cricket, showing how much the game has grown beyond its traditional strongholds.
