West Indies cricketers Aaliyah Alleyne and Qiana Joseph have been found guilty of breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the second Women’s ODI against South Africa, played at the 3Ws Oval in Barbados over the weekend.
Both players were charged with violating Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. This article pertains to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match.”
According to the ICC, examples of such dissent include:
- Excessive or obvious disappointment
- Delaying play or refusing to leave the field
- Gesturing or shaking the head
- Pointing to the inside edge or body when given out
- Arguing with or questioning the umpire’s decision
Sanctions and Penalties

- Aaliyah Alleyne was fined 10% of her match fee and received one demerit point for gesturing with open arms and delaying her exit from the field after being dismissed.
- Qiana Joseph, who reacted more forcefully, was fined 50% of her match fee and received two demerit points.
Both players accepted the charges and the penalties proposed by Match Referee Akhtar Ahmad of the Emirates ICC International Panel. As a result, a formal hearing was not required.
The charges were brought forward by on-field umpires Jacqueline Williams and Nimali Perera, with support from third umpire Candace la Borde and fourth umpire Maria Abbott.
ICC Code: Level 1 Breaches
Level 1 offences under the ICC Code of Conduct carry:
- A minimum penalty of an official reprimand
- A maximum penalty of 50% of a player’s match fee
- One or two demerit points, depending on the severity of the breach
The ICC takes such breaches seriously as part of its effort to uphold the spirit of the game and respect for officiating.
