Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) showcased their depth and dominance as their spin duo, Moeen Ali and Varun Chakravarthy, stifled Rajasthan Royals (RR) to 151 for 9. In the absence of Sunil Narine, Moeen stepped in seamlessly, partnering with Varun to dismantle RR’s batting lineup. Their combined figures of 8-0-40-4 ensured KKR didn’t need Andre Russell with the ball.
Following the bowling brilliance, Quinton de Kock took charge with a match-winning 97* off 61 balls, leading KKR to a comfortable eight-wicket victory and securing their place on the points table.
Parag’s Unfortunate Homecoming
RR skipper Sanju Samson managed just 13 off 11 balls before yorking himself against Vaibhav Arora. However, local boy Riyan Parag briefly ignited the home crowd with a stunning one-handed six off Harshit Rana. He followed it up with a spectacular lofted shot over Arora’s head, keeping RR’s hopes alive.
Parag also managed to smash Varun for a six over midwicket but was dismissed shortly after when the mystery spinner outfoxed him with a 113kph delivery that veered away, resulting in a catch to de Kock. Later, Parag contributed with the ball, delivering a tidy 4-0-25-0 spell and running Moeen out, but his return to Guwahati remained bittersweet.
Spin Duo Turns the Game
Moeen, who received his maiden KKR cap from Dwayne Bravo, proved instrumental in breaking RR’s batting rhythm. He removed an advancing Yashasvi Jaiswal for 29 off 24 balls, marking just the second time Jaiswal has been dismissed by spin in the IPL since 2023 across 197 balls.
In an attempt to counter KKR’s spinners, RR promoted Wanindu Hasaranga to No. 5, but the experiment failed. Hasaranga faced only one ball from Moeen before miscuing Varun to mid-off for just four runs.
The spinners’ dominance caused a batting collapse, as RR stumbled from 67 for 1 to 82 for 5. Their plans fell apart, forcing them to bring in Shubham Dubey at No. 7, which cost them a frontline bowler for the second innings.
De Kock’s Masterclass Guides KKR to Victory
KKR’s chase had a shaky moment when Moeen, struggling against Jofra Archer’s pace, was run out for 5 off 12 balls after a mix-up with de Kock. However, this did little to derail KKR, thanks to de Kock’s explosive batting.

The South African opener dominated the powerplay, scoring 34 of KKR’s 40 runs in the first six overs. He took on Archer, Maheesh Theekshana, and Parag with ease, ensuring there were no early hiccups.
After Rahane’s dismissal for 18 off 15, RR sensed an opening, but de Kock, along with 20-year-old Angkrish Raghuvanshi, shut the door with an unbroken 83-run stand off 44 balls.
De Kock reached his half-century off 36 balls, celebrating with back-to-back sixes off Hasaranga and Parag. While he narrowly missed a century, his effort was more than enough to see KKR home.
