Sunil Narine delivered a match-winning performance for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), leading them to a tense 14-run victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) in a thrilling contest. After initially being hit by a relentless Delhi batting attack, Narine and his spin partner Varun Chakravarthy staged a remarkable comeback, helping to restrict DC from 136 for 3 to 190 for 9.
At one stage, Narine’s figures read 2.1-0-25-0, while Chakravarthy had 3-0-31-0. The two were under pressure as DC capitalized on their earlier overs. However, they came back with vengeance, taking a combined 5 wickets for just 12 runs off the final 17 balls, propelling KKR to an essential victory in their title defense.
DC’s Batting Collapse
Axar Patel, DC’s captain, played a vital knock, scoring 43 runs off 30 balls. He hit Narine for three sixes despite battling an injured hand, but Narine responded by dismissing Axar along with Tristan Stubbs and top-scorer Faf du Plessis (62). DC went from a promising 136 for 3 to 190 for 9 as Narine led KKR’s spin attack to recover control.

In an unusual turn, Narine, who was captaining KKR after Ajinkya Rahane suffered a finger injury, executed a brilliant direct hit to run out KL Rahul from short fine leg. Narine’s tactical acumen came to the fore as he made key bowling changes, including turning to Roy, who made an impact with his spin despite having limited experience.
KKR’s Strong Start But Fizzles Out
KKR got off to a solid start, reaching 91 in the first seven overs, thanks to a strong opening partnership between Narine, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Rahane. However, despite this positive foundation, KKR couldn’t capitalize, as all three batsmen fell in the 20s, leaving Rinku Singh and Angkrish Raghuvanshi to rebuild.
Rinku and Raghuvanshi added 61 runs for the fifth wicket, but the finishing overs didn’t go according to plan, with only 45 runs coming in the final five overs. KKR’s innings stalled, with Andre Russell facing just nine balls, as wickets fell at the other end.
Spin Dominates in the End
On a pitch offering some assistance to spin, KKR’s bowling attack came alive in the latter half of the DC innings. Narine, having been initially hit by DC’s top order, changed the game by dismissing Axar Patel and Tristan Stubbs in the same over. He also played a key role in Varun Chakravarthy’s crucial breakthroughs in the final overs, removing Ashutosh Sharma and Mitchell Starc.
Narine’s excellent captaincy and his ability to adapt in the middle overs were crucial in helping KKR secure a 14-run win. With this victory, KKR stay in contention for the top six, while DC now face the pressure of maintaining their early tournament momentum.
KKR now have 9 points from 10 matches, staying alive in the race for the playoffs. Meanwhile, DC’s loss leaves them with 12 points from 10 games, and their top-two finish is now under threat.
